Study programmes higher education

The Dutch educational system has a bachelor-master structure. After the bachelor’s course, you can take a follow-up course: a more advanced course or a master’s course.

Admission

A high level is required for admission to a course in one of the arts. The criteria for admission are laid down by law for each discipline. Not only talent but also experience and training are necessary. Some institutions often offer orientation courses that can be followed in addition to regular education, for example on Saturdays.

Most courses in an arts disciplines have selection rounds that determine whether a person can be admitted as a student. You can find information about that on the websites of the relevant institutes. If you are admitted for a particular course, that does not mean that you can switch to a different institute with a similar course.

At various art academies you can follow bachelor’s and master’s courses in art. The aim of the course is to become an autonomous artist.

To become a teacher in fine art, you can follow the course fine art in education or get the teachers degree after getting a course in art. With this degree you are qualified to teach art at primary- or high schools. In addition there are various teacher training courses.

There are also courses for artists who want to do school and extra-mural educational projects. You can also choose to get a certificate via Beroepskunstenaars in de Klas (BIK) where you learn for example how you can execute educative projects in primary school. BIK does not qualify you as a teacher.

You can study architecture (including urban design and landscape architecture) at a Technical University or an Academy of Architecture. To be admitted to the Master's degree program of an Academy of Architecture, you must at least have a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. In addition, there are preparatory courses for hbo bachelors. Successful completion of such a course does not guarantee that you will be admitted to an academy. The academy of your choice can provide you with more information regarding an application.

You may only call yourself an architect if you are registered in the Architects Register. You can register there as an architect, urban planner, landscape architect or interior architect if you have completed the relevant study at an Academy of Architecture or Technical University.

You can only register after you have gained two years of professional experience. Because the master's degree programs at the Academies of Architecture are dual - learning is combined with work - you will probably already meet the professional experience condition after successful completion of your studies.

Most master courses at universities offer pre-master programmes for hbo-students to fulfill all requirements. You register for a master's course, just like students who meet all the entry requirements. The commission of admission decides whether you may follow the pre-master program and what the program will look like.
