Archive and research

The institutions below are dedicated to the collection, archiving and research of musical heritage in the Netherlands.

Beeld en Geluid (Netherlands institute for image and sound) serves as the company archives of  Dutch public television and fills a cultural purpose: to maintain, preserve and make available to as large an audience as possible - especially to educational institutions - the audiovisual legacy in The Netherlands.

Nederlands Muziek Instituut (Netherlands Music Institute) is the central depository for musical heritage of The Netherlands. It preserves, opens and makes original sources available to the public. It is the result of three important collections getting together: the music library and archives of the Gemeentemuseum (Municipal Museum) in The Hague and the music documentation collection of Stichting Musica Neerlandica.

Nederlands Jazz Archief (NJA, Netherlands jazz archives) collects and maintains an historical jazz collection where the emphasis falls on the area of Dutch jazz and jazz in The Netherlands. The archives contain various kinds of audio recordings, including 78’s, audio tapes and CDs. In addition the collection contains videos, photographs, books and journals (domestic and foreign), sheet music and arrangements, a clipping archive and curiosa such as scrapbooks.

The NJA also possesses unique collections like the Michiel de Ruyter collection and the cassette collection of chronicler Jacques Waisvisz. In addition to archives the NJA also functions as a documentation centre for researchers, (music) students, musicians and others, and actively contributes to the expansion of knowledge about jazz in The Netherlands. They do the latter by producing CDs of more or less historical recordings and by publishing the quarterly periodical Nederlands Jazz Bulletin. The archives also has a sound studio where radio programmes are recorded for the Concertzender, among others.

Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (KVNM), royal society for Dutch music history) makes the scientific study of Dutch music and its history possible. The association also strives to promote the study of music in the broadest sense of the word.
