Opera companies

In the Netherlands we have multiple opera companies. The national government, department of education, culture and science offers so-called 'long term subsidy' to the following three companies in the basic infrastructure (basisinfrastructuur, BIS) 2021-2024:

BIS-companies 2021-2024

Nationale Opera & Ballet is the leading Dutch organisation for opera and ballet. It was formed out of a merge of De Nationale Opera, Het Nationale Ballet and Het Muziektheater.

De Nederlandse Reisopera (Dutch Touring Opera) has its home in Enschede and provides a (concentrated) national distribution of operatic offerings.

Opera Zuid (Opera South), based in Maastricht, is a touring company which mainly directs itself at the southern part of the country.

More interesting companies

Besides the three opera companies in the basisinfrastructuur (BIS) there are companies who also offer interesting options for young makers. These companies get their money from the Performing Arts Fund, provinces, municipalities, private funds and/or sponsors.

Kasko is a chamber for opera and small-scale music theatre in Zwolle and a production house for companies and (self-employed) makers and a workshop for young makers.

Muziektheater Hollands Diep produces music theatre and opera based on repertoire from 1945 till now. The performances usually take place on a location in or near Dordrecht. It offers young singers and other performing artists stage experience. The music theatre receives structural subsidy from the municipality of Dordrecht.

Opera per Tutti organises opera evenings composed of famous arias and ensembles at suitable locations in The Netherlands, often in the Vondelkerk Amsterdam.

Opera Spanga produces opera in the Frisian village Spanga. Opera Spanga is subsidized by the Fryslan province and municipality Weststellingwerf and for every production they apply for funding at private funds.

HollandOpera produces new opera based on classic plays, mythology and literature. HollandOpera also performs (in theatres) for primary and secondary schools.
