Working in classical music

There are many ways of working in classical music, for example with orchestras or ensembles. If you get to play in an orchestra you will be hired as an employee most of the time. Orchestra members often have an employment contract and are paid for rehearsals and concerts. Many musicians start with substituting before they get a fixed spot in an orchestra.

To play often is important, many musicians do this playing in an ensemble. Ensembles get paid per concert by the venue. Musicians are on pay roll or, if they are self-employed, they send an invoice.
