Types of monuments

National monuments
National monuments are in the Monument Register and designated by the government as a monument for their national character.

Provincial monuments
The provinces North Holland and Drenthe designated monuments with a provincial interest such as buildings, dikes and border markers.

Municipal monuments
Monuments designated by the municipality with a regional interest.

Protected sights
Protected sights of towns and villages with a special cultural and historical character. All buildings within this area are not automatically monuments.

Mobile heritage
Mobile heritage and historic vehicles are registered in the national register, Nationaal Register Mobiel Erfgoed (NRME).

World heritage
World heritage is listed by UNESCO. All places on the list of World Heritage Sites are of great cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World heritage list counts 12 heritage sites in The Netherlands.
