Awards in heritage

There are thesis awards, awards for young talent and heritage awards. The first two are individual prizes, heritage awards are intended for cultural institutions. These awards are for various subjects and at different levels: local, regional, national and international.

Thesis awards

Why would you submit your thesis to win an individual prize? If your work is selected, you will have the opportunity to show your research to a large audience. You will get recognition for your hard work and attention for your innovative results. The award usually comes with a considerable sum of prize money as well.

P.J.A. van Mensch Prize
The Pieter Jan Abraham van Mensch Prize is awarded annually for the best  graduation thesis of the Reinwardt Academy. This incentive prize is named after the first professor of the Reinwardt Academy.

AHK Graduation Prize
The Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) annually presents the AHK Graduation Prize to the best graduation project on Bachelor and Master level. An important criterion is the way in which the students make a connection ​​with the outside world, and the relevance of the work for the further development of their field of study. The prizes consists of € 3,000.

ICOM Thesis Award
The ICOM (International Council of Museums) Nederland has an annual award for an innovative study of international developments in the museum world. The prize consists of € 1,500 and the opportunity to present the thesis at the international conference of ICOM. ICOM Nederland makes € 500 travel costs available.

W.A. van Es Award
Incentive of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (State Service for Cultural Heritage) for young research talent in the field of Dutch archaeology. The award is in rotation assigned to a dissertation, a master thesis or another notable publication. The ceremony traditionally takes place during the Reuvensdagen. The prize consists of € 2,000 and a certificate.

Awards for young talent

Culture Marketing Awards: Young Talent Award
With this biennial award, the creative, effective and inspiring marketing cases in the culture sector are rewarded and stimulated. The Young Talent Award is an award for a cultural marketing talent of 30 years old or younger. The jury is looking for young professionals with a vision of the profession and who have converted them into results through a unique and innovative approach. The prize is linked to a personal development budget of € 750 and, among other things, a workshop and coaching.

Museum Talent
This award is intended for young museum professionals in the Netherlands. The award is not only important for young professionals, it is also a message to the professional field, where aging, innovation and diversity are relevant aspects of organizational development. The development prize stimulates thinking in the sector about knowledge transfer and rejuvenation in organizations. The winner receives a unique development track of €3,000 that can be completed according to their own wishes. The remaining two finalists will each receive €1,500 for the same cause.

Monument Talent
For this award, professionals from the monument sector can nominate candidates younger than 32 years old with a striking role, special competence, character or (innovative) approach. The winner is an ambassador for the field. The winner receives a unique development track of €3,000 that can be completed according to their own wishes. The remaining two finalists will each receive €1,500 for the same cause.

Heritage awards

Heritage awards contribute to quality improvement in the heritage sector. The system of heritage awards not only ensures quality improvement for the winning organizations, these good practices also inspire others. The knowledge and experience of the prize winners can also be used at other institutions. In addition, the prizes also ensure enjoyment, reward for high-performing staff and, above all, recognition. Heritage institutions can use winning an award for image improvement, for personnel policy or to attract public. A selection:

BNG Bank Erfgoedprijs 
Initiative of the Heritage Platform of the organisation Kunsten '92 for best heritage municipality of the Netherlands. It is not the amount of cultural heritage that counts, but what you do with it. The award consists of € 25,000 that the BNG Culture Fund makes available to encourage municipalities to make cultural history an integral aspect of all municipal policies.

European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards 
These international awards are an initiative of the European Commission. The purpose of the awards is to celebrate the successes in the heritage field in order to promote best practices. The awards are divided into five categories: Conservation & Adaptive Reuse; Research; Education, Training & Skills; Citizens Engagement & Awareness-raising; Heritage Champions. The selection will look at, among other things, the extent to which the project contributes to increasing support for heritage in Europe. All winners receive a certificate and a placard. The best five projects will be Grand Prix laureates and receive € 10,000.

Grote Archeologie Prijs
The Great Archeology Award rewards the project that inspires people with archaeology. This biennial prize gives initiators an incentive to tell stories about the past and to link them to current themes, habits and customs. The prize is an initiative of the Archeology & Public Foundation (SAP) and puts the spotlight on projects that share archeology with the general public in an innovative, creative or inspiring way.

Heritage Volunteer Award
In the heritage sector are often volunteer groups that are committed to the preservation, maintenance and opening up of (intangible) cultural heritage. That is why the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science developed this award for volunteer groups. The winning team will receive a check for € 10,000; half can be spent freely (for example on team activities) and half is to promote knowledge transfer in the field of voluntary work for which the team is committed. There is also a check for € 5,000 for the numbers two and three.
