Studying for a profession in the arts
You are training to be, for instance, an architect, dancer, musician, fine artist, producer or theatre technician, a professional in heritage or an art teacher. The fact that you are training means that you may not yet be aware of the significant risks of your future profession, and perhaps not of the risks of your course either. All the same, you want a safe and healthy study environment.

How to ensure a safe and healthy study environment
Of course, you use your common sense. That means that you will discuss any doubts about the safety of a certain environment, situation or assignment with the relevant tutor in advance. If you are afraid that such a discussion will affect your assessment, talk with other students or the course managers, a student dean or a prevention official.

Make sure that you know which occupational illnesses are common in your discipline. That gives you an insight into the risks you run during your course. Only you can care for your own body and mind. Someone else may fall short with measures for your safety, but if something goes wrong, you are the one who suffers. 

Prevention programmes at your training institute
Attention to prevention is customary at many art schools. You will learn how you can work on staying in top shape during and after your course, and at the same time, avoid occupational risks.

The Working Conditions Act
It is good to know that the Working Conditions Act also applies to you while you are a student. In principle, the Working Conditions Act is intended to protect employees. Your institution/course provider has many obligations to ensure that employees can work in as safe and healthy an environment as possible:
- The risks must be identified in a Risk Identification and Evaluation (RIE).
- An Action Plan must state what is and will be done about management of these risks
- A prevention officer must be appointed.
- Policies must be in place regarding sexual intimidation and aggression.
- A confidence officer must be appointed, to whom employees can address questions.
