... a work placement in a film company

You want to gain experience in the field through a work placement (apprenticeship, internship). You also want to get to know people who might be important to you later on, when you look for work after graduating.
If the internship is a part of your education, start with the coordinator at school. Most schools have good contacts in the field and can help out. In general there are certain requirements for the work placement if it is a part of the educational program.

Work placement objectives

Always begin with what you want to learn during a work placement, and which assistant functions are suitable for that. Do you want to try out something specific in the professional field which you learned at school? Are you looking for something to supplement your study? Do you want to find out how it goes in the real world, regardless of what position you’re in?  If you''re already in a job while you are looking for a work placement, you will probably use the work placement to meet the right people and find out what kind of work suits you best.

Work placement provider
Obtain information about the productions being worked on during the period when you want to do your apprenticeship. Older students or former students can help you with this, as can organizations like the Fonds voor de Film (Film Fund). Select from the productions which interest you. Get hold of names and addresses of the (executive) producers or production managers. Send them written requests in which you state which work placement you would like to do. Make it clear what sort of training you are doing and how far along you are. Always send a CV with it. Mention how and where you can be reached. It is smart to mention in the letter that you will, for instance, call them a week later to make contact. And be sure you do call, especially if you have had no response.

Work placement contract

As an apprentice or intern you are usually dealing with the organization where you are apprenticing and the work placement provider himself. So including yourself there are three parties who have rights and obligations in regard to each other. Most schools write down the agreements between the apprentice and organization in a contract. You set your learning goals in advance and write a report when you finished the work placement.

Work placement allowance

The knife cuts both ways with an apprenticeship: the provider offers you the opportunity to gain practical experience, which you get by performing one or more jobs for him.
It is common to receive a work placement allowance. The amount is a subject for discussion when it becomes clear that you and the provider are interested in working together. Ask what amount the provider is considering, and then make agreements based on a day, a week or a month of work. Sometimes the provider offers a fixed amount for the entire work placement period. A reasonable allowance is between 12 and 24 euros per day. If doing the internship means that you have to stop doing your paid job for the time being, make sure you have enough money to live while you are in the work placement.
