What is online marketing?
The term online marketing is used to refer to all internet activities by means of which you can publicise and/or sell your (company) name, art, projects, exhibitions or performances. Besides traditional marketing, internet has enabled all kinds of new forms of marketing.
The basis for your internet activities is usually your own website. Most providers and operating systems offer software to construct your own website yourself. Remember how important you yourself consider an attractive and easy to use website to be.
You can place banners with your advert yourself on other websites. It can be very expensive, depending on how often such a site is clicked. Of course you can also see whether you can place banners free of charge or exchange them with other companies. You can also try to get companies or institutions to place banners on your site to provide you with an extra source of income.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
SEM is often a very expensive way of finding out via complicated mathematical calculations which word combinations put your website at the top of the list of a search engine.
Besides or instead of a database with postal addresses, you can build a database with mail addresses. It is also possible, and often more interesting for the reader, to adapt your mailing to the personal preferences of the readers. Make sure that your advertising mail is not treated as spam, you must make the mail personal.
Facebook, Hyves, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter are the best-known social media. Members can form groups or communities with a shared interest on these sites. The members of these communities are called friends or fans. These communities differ in one respect from the traditional fan clubs: visiting those sites and thus viewing your work is not dependent on time and is possible all over the world.
The idea is that a member of a community who is interested in your work receives information directly from you or via friends in the form of text, image or video. The profile that you make is a sort of mini website about you and your work. Link it to your own website as well. It is very important to keep this profile and your website up to date and to adopt an active attitude. For instance, respond to the questions and reactions of your visitors as often as possible. Put your new projects on it, when, where you can be seen/heard, and check what your visitors think of it. And then start looking for friends…
